Tolai Hares are the only native species of rabbit/hare in Mongolia. I’ve seen them in a variety of locations. Sometimes they will wait, crouched down, until you’re very close and then suddenly explode from cover and take off. leaving you with a nice little adrenaline rush. Many visitors go home with only photos of tolai hare hind ends moving away and I have my share of those. But last year at Ikh Nart I was already up on the rocks just sitting still waiting for argali when this one came out to graze in the early evening light, so after years of trying, I got some very nice photos and will be doing a painting at some point.

I visited Hustai National Park in 2013 (where there are almost 300 takhi/Przewalski’s horses) and was photographing horses on a hillside that dropped below eye level to a streambed, when one horse, then two, then three, then more and more, suddenly started to come up over the edge on my side. I sat down on right the spot and had the extraordinary experience of watching a large harem of takhi walk right past me, about 30 yards away, snapping photos of them as they went by. This drawing is one of the mares who had a foal with her. She kept an eye on me as she and her baby went by.

This past trip to Mongolia, I went to the soum center of Erdenetsogt, about an 11 hour drive from Ulaanbaatar, to visit Gachen Lama Khiid (monastery). Out in front of the gate was a huge rock pile with a colony of short-tailed weasels! I took tons of photos and was kept throughly entertained for over an hour as they popped in and out of the rocks. The youngster in the drawing was up on a high spot checking things out.

I first met “Lucky”, a eurasian black/cinereous vulture, when he was in an enclosure near the research camp at Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Nature Reserve. I was allowed in with him and got some great photos. He was curious and cautious, not scared at all. He’d crashed on his first attempt to fly and had broken one wing in three places. The researchers brought him back to camp and there he stayed for over a year while they got all the permissions and permits needed to bring him to the Denver Zoo. And that’s where he lives today. 20% of the sales price will be donated to support research at Ikh Nart.
