I'm a nature/wildlife artist. I love to travel and enjoy reading, gardening and birdwatching; My taste in music runs to Mongolian rock and pop, 60's rock. pre-1940's jazz, afro-celt world music. I started my art career as a sign painter's apprentice in 1976 and earned a BFA in Illustration in 1989 from the Academy of Art in San Francisco. I've worked as a freelance sign painter/graphic designer, then graphic designer/illustrator. For the past twenty years I've focused on oil painting, but am now also going full circle back to the media I first fell in love with, pen and ink. I'm a member of the California Art Club, a Signature Member of Artists for Conservation and a Fellow of The Explorers Club. My work has appeared in a variety of prestigious national juried shows since 2003.

Inktober 2018 “Cape Buffalo”

Inktober 21 “Cape Buffalo” Love these guys. One of my favorites. I’ve seen them home on the range in Kenya and even from a safe distance these big bulls have tremendous presence. This one was at Lake Nakuru National Park. Gillott 170 nib, Diamine Jet Black ink, Strathmore […]

Inktober 2018 “Dragonfly”

Inktober 19- “Dragonfly” One of the first things we did when we bought our one acre property over ten years ago was to put in a big pond, almost 40×40’. Within a couple of months two species of frogs, Pacific tree frogs and endangered red-legged frogs, showed up. […]

Inktober 2018- “Kangaroo”

Inktober 18 “Kangaroo” Today’s piece is, like the gorilla, doubling as a study for a painting. Photographing the kangaroos at the San Francisco Zoo some years ago inadvertently ended up with this cropping, which I really, really liked. Tried out a looser outline and line work just for […]

Inktober 2018- “Bison”

Inktober 16 “Bison”– I love drawing bison! Especially the big bulls who are attitude from one end to the other. I saw this one in Yellowstone National Park. Went international with the supplies this time…a Yaroslawl “Orgtechnika” nib from a Ukrainian seller on Etsy. The nib has a […]

Inktober 2018- “Giraffe”

Inktober 14- “Giraffe” I really loved the curve of his neck and the light and shadow pattern in my reference photo. This is the third of the toned papers I’m trying out for Inktober, a Stillman and Birn Nova series sketchbook. I used a Gillott 303 EF nib […]
