Unlike much of the country we’ve turned the seasonal corner out here in northern California. Unfortunately the day after day of nice warm sunny weather means that we’re not getting any rain, so we’re going into a fourth year of drought. At the moment, though, the garden is starting up again with the first bulbs blooming, plus a few other “early risers”. The Anna’s Hummingbird in the photo was in the yard at the end of last month. There’s usually hummers around in the winter and spring, dog-fighting for, well, just about anything it sometimes seems. This guy landed in one of the apple trees. I couldn’t get very close, so even with my long lens (Nikon 80-400mm) he was pretty tiny in the photos. But I thought it would be fun to share one of him in his full “don’t mess with me” display.

What beautiful pictures. Such a nice post. Have lived in California, loved it there. Now live in the South East. Once managed to get some pictures of an albino humming bird back here. Quite unusual.

Saw it in my yard at my feeder in 1993. Have an old photo of it. Do not know if I could scan and inhance it enough to really let any one see how pretty it was.

I put 2 pictures of the white humming bird on a post on my blog. They are not close ups and my camera was inferior because it was 1993, but at least you can say you saw a white humming bird.

Excellent! Lots of Daffs and Hellebores flowering here in our garden in the UK too – no hummingbirds though!

Hellebores are blooming, just aren’t very photogenic at the moment. Hummers are around, but haven’t gotten pics yet. Hearing them though. The winter birds like juncos are still here hanging around the feeder. Some of the wallflowers have already started up. Grew them from seed I got in England many years ago.
